I’m Danny Matthews, the maker behind Scuffletown Trading Co. I grew up in my father’s shop, surrounded by the sound of machinery, influenced by craftsmen and the steady rhythm of honest work. He taught me early that craftsmanship isn’t about speed or profit. It’s about patience, pride, and doing things right, even when no one’s watching.
For more than twenty-five years I owned and operated a custom furniture and cabinet shop, building pieces meant to last a lifetime. Somewhere along the way, I traded my tools for a desk when I took a job as a sales and operations director. It paid the bills, but it didn’t feed the soul. I missed the kind of work that leaves sawdust on your boots and satisfaction in your hands.
I first picked up leather in 2019, drawn to its simplicity and strength. What started as a small side project turned into a real passion—cutting, stitching, and shaping each piece by hand, the same way I approached wood. When I stepped away to work in an office, the craft went quiet for a while. Coming back to it reminded me what real craftsmanship feels like: steady, quiet, and honest.
Scuffletown Trading Co. is my way back. A return to honest work, rooted in family, faith, and the lessons passed down through generations before me. Every piece I make is built the way my dad taught me—slow, steady, and made to last.

The Story Behind Scuffletown
Scuffletown Trading Co. was born from a deep respect for heritage, craftsmanship, and the stories that shape who we are. Our roots trace back to McDuffie County, Georgia, near a rough-and-tumble crossroads known as Scuffletown—once a stagecoach stop owned by our ancestors, where trades were made, stories were shared, and the occasional scuffle gave the place its name.
As a third-generation craftsman, I spent over 25 years building custom cabinetry before stepping away to work in operations and sales. But I felt the pull to return to the workshop—this time, with leather. After struggling to find a well-made leather padfolio that fit my lifestyle, I decided to make one myself. That journey—some tools, a few YouTube videos, and a whole lot of trial and error—ignited something.
What began as Scuffletown Mercantile Co. has evolved into Scuffletown Trading Company, a collection of handcrafted leather goods built with purpose, inspired by legacy, and made to last a lifetime. Every item—whether it’s a padfolio, card wallet, or bourbon glass wrap—is cut, stitched, and finished by hand with the same care and pride that’s been passed down through generations.
